Conservative megadonator Tim Dunn backs Shelley Luther in his bid for the Texas Senate with a $ 1 million loan, a significant sum for such a race.

Luther, the owner of the Dallas salon who was jailed earlier this year for her refusal to close his business due to coronavirus restrictions, is in a six-way special election on September 29 to succeed Senator Pat Fallon, R-Prosper, as he prepares to join Congress. The seat is solidly red.

Luther’s campaign confirmed the $ 1 million loan Friday night, three days before the campaign funding deadline in the race. The loan was first reported by The Texan news site.

Vote in Texas

  • When was the last day to register to vote?

The deadline to register to vote in the 2020 general election was October 5. Check if you are registered to vote here. Otherwise, you will need to complete and submit an application, which you can ask here or Download here.

  • When can I vote earlier?

Early voting for the 2020 general election runs from October 13 to 30. Voters can vote at any polling station in the county where they are registered to vote in the early poll. Election day is November 3.

  • How will the vote be different due to the pandemic?

In general, polling stations will have guidelines in place for social distancing and regular cleaning. Several counties will offer ballot marking devices so that voters avoid contact with election materials. Poll workers will likely wear face masks and other protective gear, but masks will not be required for voters.

  • How do I know if I can vote by mail?

Texas is one of the few states that has not opened postal voting to any voter concerned about getting COVID-19 at a polling station. You can find the eligibility requirements and review other questions on postal vote here.

  • Are the polling places the same on polling day as during the advance poll?

Not always. You will want to check open polling stations with your local election office before going to vote. Additionally, you can confirm with your county polling station whether voting on polling day is limited to locations in your designated constituency or whether you can vote at any polling station.

  • Can I still vote if I have COVID-19?

Yes. If you’ve been diagnosed with COVID-19 or are showing symptoms, consider requesting an emergency mail-in ballot or using curbside voting. Contact your departmental elections office for more details on the two options.

In one statement explaining his support for LutherDunn praised her for resisting what he described as too much of a bipartisan government push in the fight against the pandemic. He said he loaned him $ 1 million because “Austin Swamp tipped the playing field to nullify Shelley’s field advantage,” referring to the fast-track schedule Gov. Greg Abbott ordered to fill the seat of Fallon.

Luther’s closest Republican competitor is the State Representative. Drew springer from Münster. He responded to the news of the loan in citing several groups who supported him, including the Texas Farm Bureau and the National Rifle Association, and saying they “knew how much a [Empower Texans] bought and paid for Senator would be for Texas. Empower Texans is the tough right-wing group Dunn has funded over the years.

Early voting for the special elections began on Monday and ends on September 25. The next campaign fundraising deadline covers fundraising until Saturday.

Texas Farm Bureau has financially supported The Texas Tribune, a non-profit, non-partisan news organization that is funded in part by donations from members, foundations and corporate sponsors. Financial support plays no role in the journalism of the Tribune. Find a suit list of them here.
