Rusk County Sheriff sees increase in copper thefts | KETK.com
RUSK COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – After a man was shocked for climbing a pole to steal copper, the Rusk County Sheriff explained how widespread copper theft is.
Theft of copper can cause serious injury and kill those who steal it, even threatening the public.
Johnwayne Valdez, the Rusk County Sheriff, explained that the price of copper is very high.
“Copper 1 costs about $ 3 a pound and Copper 2 costs about $ 3.20 a pound,” Sheriff Valdez said.
Copper thefts are generally cashed in salvage yards.
Sheriff Valdez said they were watching closely as some yards would not accept large quantities due to suspicion of theft.
“I mean it’s good for them, but with the price a little higher than it has been for several years, it’s going to be a problem again,” Sheriff Valdez added.
In addition to theft, those who steal copper from power lines can cause power system failures.
âThere are issues with our electrical equipment that we can detect on our system,â explained Peter Main, Head of Corporate Communications at SWEPCO. “But this is vandalism (and it is) damage to our electrical system.”
Main added that theft from power lines can impact customers and repairs can be very expensive.
âThese are costs for SWEPCO and for our customers,â Main added. âSo it’s not just a downside, it’s also a cost issue. “
Stealing copper is not easy, time consuming and dangerous. It is recommended to have home camera systems to keep an eye on a property.
