Martin Odegaard loan Arsenal ended: newest gunner says boss Mikel Arteta ‘crucial’ to persuading him
Martin Odegaard says Mikel Arteta played a crucial role in convincing him to move from Real Madrid to Arsenal amid the interest of several rival suitors for his services until the end of the season.
Odegaard was unveiled today as Arsenal’s new No.11, on loan from Real Madrid until the end of the season. The Gunners entered the race last week, beating competition from Ajax and Real Sociedad, the latter being the club where the Norwegian excelled on loan last season.
Arsenal boss Arteta was part of a club-wide charm offensive to convince Odegaard to move to the Premier League, where he is expected to compete with Emile Smith Rowe for the No.10 position on the Gunners’ side.
Odegaard arrived in London late Sunday, passing his medical exam and meeting his new teammates on Monday. Arsenal and Arteta are hoping to get him involved in their first team soon, although it would be a remarkable step to launch him in the starting XI against Manchester United on Sunday. Either way, the club convinced his new signing of their big plans for him.
“It’s been hectic days but I’ve spoken to the club, to the manager and it seems like a big project and a big club. I’m so excited, when I felt I had a chance to come here. felt like it was a very good opportunity to seize, “said Odegaard. “I’m really happy to be here.
“[Arteta and technical director Edu] want me to come here and try to help the team. I think it’s a good chance for me to improve myself and I hope I can help the team improve and reach our goals for this year.

It wasn’t Arteta alone who swung Odegaard in the direction of Arsenal with fellow Real Madrid player Dani Ceballos, texting him with “nothing but good things to say about the club, the manager and all”. His signing will be seen as a huge boost for Edu, who had vowed to solve the Gunners’ creative problems in a window where Mesut Ozil was allowed to leave for free.
“Martin is an exceptional talent and we are strengthening our squad by introducing an exciting attacking player to the club for the remaining months of this season,” said Arsenal’s technical director.
Arteta added: “It’s great that we made sure Martin came to us until the end of the season. Martin is of course a player we all know very well and although still young he plays in the game. highest level in a while. Martin will provide us with some quality offensive options and we are all excited to have that in our plans by May. “
